Philosophical Practice
in a Nutshell
Contemporary “ Philosophische Praxis “ started out in Germany in 1980s on the initiative of Gerd B. Achenbach. The origins of philosophical practice, however, are much more ancient and dates back to Socrates (IV century b.C.).
In antiquities, the Middle ages and the Renaissance, philosophy was a discipline applied to life. Different philosophical schools and orientations proposed different kinds of practical knowledge requiring to be constantly exercised and involving the wholeness of one own’s existence.
Today’s philosophical practice intends to revive the invaluable potential of philosophical tradition to support individuals and communities in their search for a good life. What is specifically philosophical in this practice is the approach: rigorous, question-oriented, impermeable to theoretical regimentation. In its search for workable wisdom, however, philosophical practice relies on an interdisciplinary toolbox of theoretical frameworks, ranging from systemic psychology to social theory, from cultural anthropology to gender and communication studies.
